Labradoodle History & Origin

The History of the LABRADOODLE

(I am asked everyday about the Confusion over US Labradoodles & Australian Labradoodles)

Several years ago in the late 70'S a trainer for the Royal Guide Dogs Association crossed a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle in the attempt to create an allergy friendly dog for a buyer with severe allergy's.

The trainer, Wally Conran, called his creation the Labradoodle. He went on to breed Labradoodles to Labradoodles which he called DoubleDoodles and DoubleDoodles to DoubleDoodles which he called Tri Doodles.

The thought of creating a wonderful and highly intelligent and trainable dog companion with allergy friendly, non shedding coat is being continued by a number of highly qualified, conscientious U.S. Breeders & Aust Breeders.

Labradoodle Breeders across the US
and Australia have made the Labradoodle what it is today

Originally the Founders used several Dogs to create the Australian Labradoodle. Now Multi Generations are Bred Labradoodle back to Poodle, Doodle to Doodle to create a Wonderful Dog

Parent Breeds of the Australian Labradoodle were as follows:
1. Poodle (Standard, Miniature, Toy),
2. Labrador Retriever,
3. Irish Water Spaniel,
4. Curly Coat Retriever,
5. American Cocker Spaniel and
6. English Cocker Spaniel.

The Very First Labradoodle was Poodle & Lab only.

Even though they may shed, non of my buyers have had problems with allergy with them, the 2nd generation is fleecy coat and will not shed and perfect for allergy suffers.

SEVERAL UPSETTING FACTS & ARTICLES ARE NOW BEING PUBLISHED ABOUT THE FOUNDER IN AUSTRALIA OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE

AS OF TODAYS DATE APRIL 30, 2008 the originial founder that got into trouble here in Florid and dumped several dogs, 30, at human shelter, is now getting out of business ,trying to auction off labradoodles to american Public, sell sick and unhealthy doodles
and non tested doodles with known dieases to people, this has the Doodle Association up in arms and has banded the Original Owner from the Assoc. No dog should ever be auctioned off ! IMO

This is a very despicable thing she is doing and we will not stand for this kind of breeding any longer. Several people have been dupped and its now time to take a stance and tell the American Public what they bought into when they say I want or got an Austrtlian Labradoodle.

Like mentioned before in my posting here, Thank goodness for some of the American labradoodle breeders that have taken these Australian Doodles and infused them into better lines like the American Breeders of Doodles are doing, to rid them of diease and problems and the founders misgivings of their pedigrees.

( This is a Post from a nice lady that thought she was getting a Nice Australian Labradoodle from the Founder of the Breed)

my name is Maxine and I am e-mailing you because I feel that I need
to warn people about a serious ethics problem at the heart of the
labradoodle industry.

Here is my horror story:?I have wanted an original australian labradoodle
from one of the?two founding breeders for over 5 years and I promised
myself when I retire that I would get one. I fell in love with the fluffy
face!

I recently retired and I picked out a puppy from the Tegan website in
Florida.? I was SO excited. Weeks later I asked for a more recent picture
of my pup (it was still too young to be shipped to me).? The picture
sent?showed an entirely different dog with a smooth muzzle and it did not
look at all like a labradoodle.? After several calls and e-mails to Kim at
Tegan who still?vehemently insisted that the hair on?the pup's face will
grow in and he will look like his mother Zepher (see?the Tegan?website for
a picture of her), I continued with the purchase of this dog. The dog
arrived at the airport and I could see that the hair on his face would
never grow longer.? I was horrified; this did not look like a labradoodle.
Kim still insisted his hair will grow in.

One day, someone came to deliver a package and when he saw the pup he
said: "nice Irish Water Spaniel."? I then contacted Angela the owner in
Australia.? After several e-mails back and forth she FINALLY admitted that
the pup was a "throwback" to an earlier mix-in with an Irish Water Spaniel
and OF COURSE will always have a smooth muzzle.? She treated me like I was cruel to the pup for not liking him like he is and laid a terrible guilt trip on me.? She said I can return the dog at my expense and I must get another pup from them (shipping at my expense again and I cannot get my money back).? I have told my story to other breeders and they have all said this is unethical (the breed standard written by Angela herself says
"a flat coat is no longer acceptable in the breed) so I have decided to
tell my story to everyone.? I am putting up a website and when anyone does
a search in Yahoo and Google on Tegan, Tegan Park, Australian Labradoodle,
etc, they will get my story.? I feel like I can help the breed best by
telling the story of a greedy founder who has lost her way.? (If you are
interested I can send you a photo of the pup.) Regards Maxine

Nothing could be more upsetting to us American labradoodle breeders than to know the Founder would dump dogs and auction dogs off. This is not right and etchical breeder would never never think of threating a dog or breeding stock like a pesty bug . Very unfortuante news

UPSETTING ARTICLE TO THE DOODLE OWNERS & BREEDERS JUST PUBLISHED IN ORLANDO SENTINEL NEWSPAPER

Posted December 5, 2006

LADY LAKE Florida-- The Australian Labradoodles once had their curly coats groomed and ate doggie gourmet meals of raw meat, V8 juice and yogurt.

The Labrador-poodle hybrids fetched $2,900 each for their breeders, Angela and Derek Cunningham, until the 47 dogs became victims in the couple's divorce.

The Labradoodles were neglected -- their non-shedding coats matted and covered in sandspurs.

Packed into outdoor kennels at the breeding ground in Lady Lake, some dogs suffered heatstroke, some had sores and others drank slimy green water.

When Angela Cunningham took control of the dogs late last month, animal-control officials warned her that the dogs' care and living conditions needed dramatic improvement.

The next day she sent 30 dogs, worth at least $75,000, to the pound. In less than two days, every designer dog was adopted for less than $150 -- a financial casualty in a divorce fraught with accusations.

"It's just a tragic end to those poor dogs," said breeder Peggy McElroy who had leased the Lady Lake ranch to the Cunninghams.

A BREEDER HAS A RESPONSIBLILY TO PROTECT, LOVE AND PLACE DOGS IN GOOD HOMES. Not shelters, not dog pounds.
A Breeder should stand behind the parent dogs, the pups they sell and provide loving homes for retired dogs and pups as well. A breeder should always take back a puppy that is in an unfortunate home situation and not destroy the dog.

However, the American Labradoodle Breeders that have established good breeding dogs be will be here for our buyers and represent this wonderful dog . Always ! Buy from American Labradoodle Breeders here in US breeding both American & Australian Lines from ethical breeders please.

TODAY in the US there are plenty of ethical, honest caring swell breeders that would be glad to show you Parent AKC records, Labradoodle records from various Organizations that breeders belong to & OFA test, DNA and you name it.

I am very Proud of our English Lab Parent dogs and Standard Poodles, as I will stand behind my pedigrees and my parent dogs.

Always buy from an ethical Breeder with excellent references, past & present .

It makes all the difference in the world.
